WHEREAS, there is a crisis in employment for blind people in this country, with estimates of between 70 and 85% of blind Americans being without a job; and

WHEREAS, one of the major barriers to employment for the blind is the prejudices and preconceptions of blindness held by the sighted public; and

WHEREAS, Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski has proclaimed the month of October to be Meet the Blind Month to encourage the sighted public to learn about and interact with the blind, which is the only proven way to combat these negative preconceptions: Now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, by the National Federation of the Blind of Oregon in convention assembled this 10th day of October, 2009, in the city of Cottage Grove, Oregon, that this organization express its thanks to Governor Kulongoski for this important proclamation.
