Legislative Seminar

NFB of Oregon will be holding our Legislative Seminar at the Shilo Inn, located at 3304 Market Street NE, on March 4th and 5th in Salem, Oregon. Then on Monday, March 6th we will go to the Capitol to meet with our state Representatives and Senators to discuss matters that affect blind Oregonians. At this time, we are working on a bill that would ensure protections for blind and disabled parents and guardians from unwarranted scrutiny from government agencies. There may be additional issues as the legislative session moves along, and other bills of interest or concern arise.

Seminar Details
The seminar will begin with lunch at noon on Saturday, March 4th. Hotel room rates are $109 per night, and includes breakfast. The meal package, which includes lunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday, is $50. Please email me to register for the seminar. Registration deadline is February 15th. Please do not make a reservation directly with the hotel.

To reserve your spot or for questions, send an email to Carla McQuillan president at nfb-oregon.org or call 541.653.9153.

NFB BELL® Academy

The NFB BELL® Academy—which stands for National Federation of the Blind Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning®—is a nationwide (United States and Puerto Rico) summer program that prepares blind and low-vision children to grow into confident and independent blind people who live the lives they want.

NFB of Oregon will partner with NFB of Washington for a residential program to be held at Washington School for the Blind in Vancouver. The event is planned for July 30 through August 6, 2023, and will be for children 8 to 13 years of age.

Volunteers from both states are needed. A training session for volunteers is being planned for April 29 and 30 at Washington School for the blind. Registration for training will be required. For those from outside the Portland area, on-site lodging will be available for both the training sessions and the week long event.

More information to follow.

Membership and Informational Sessions

NFB of Oregon is planning a series of membership and informational sessions throughout Oregon in the next several months. Locations, dates and times will be announced. Each session is planned for two hours. Topics will include our national and state organizations, chapters and divisions, NFB-NEWSLINE® demonstration and legislative matters. Refreshments are planned. There will be no charge but registration will be required. Planning is still underway, more information to come.

NFB of Oregon is assisting its chapters and divisions with the collection of membership dues for 2022. Those wishing to pay membership dues and/or donate to a local chapter or division can do so here by credit or debit card. We will also gladly accept dues for membership at large and donations to NFB of Oregon.

The National Federation of the Blind knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future. Every day we raise the expectations of blind people, because low expectations create obstacles between blind people and our dreams. You can live the life you want; blindness is not what holds you back.
